Memory Foam Mattresses - How Toxic Are They?

Please Go HERE Before You READ This Article!

A dream of mine for several years has been to get one of those really expensive, super luxuriously comfortable, memory foam mattresses. Ever since I layed down on my In-Law's new bed a few years ago, and sank into what felt like heavenly, floating soft yet firm clouds, I decided I needed to have one of these amazing mattresses! I have been waiting until we could really justify the expense of a new mattress and new bedroom furniture. A recent 40th Birthday present allowed me to purchase the next best thing to the real deal complete mattress, a memory foam topper. I'm sure most of you are familiar with 'topper's'. The Memory Foam Topper with a Cotton Pillow Top cover that I found at Target, was just what I was looking for. It would help turn my traditional box spring mattress into hopefully what would feel like a memory foam mattress. I picked the most expensive one they had, figuring it had to be the best and most comfortable and excitedly head home to put it on the bed. I read the reviews online and other than comments about a curious smell that emits from the topper and takes several days to disappear, I thought this was going to finally give me my long awaited pillow, soft comfort. Almost as good as the mattress itself!

Well, well, well. Let's see, where do I start? Do I start with the horrendous smell that came out as soon as we unrolled and unwrapped the foam from the packaging? Or do I explain how the cotton pillow top cover that goes over the foam, didn't quite fit right? Do I talk about the smell that seemed to penetrate the sheets, the bedding, the pillows and the entire room?

Thank you so much for this information. We have been sleeping on a Temperpedic for about 5 years and I can't stand it! My husband loves it, but honestly I can't get comfortable and I wake up from sweating. I can't wait to do more research on organic beds. Any suggestions?

Thanks for writing up your experience. I found your blog post because we have a polyurethane foam-based baby bed and it has a strong smell.

However, I'm writing this comment because I notice that you occasionally put apostrophes after words to pluralize them, and I wanted to point out that this is incorrect. For instance, you put an apostrophe in plural nouns like "topper's" and "consumer's", but not in "kids", "products", "returns", "manufacturers", etc.

I see a lot of people on the internet misusing apostrophes, and it's become a bit of a personal quest of mine to just make people aware of it. The rule for apostrophes is actually very simple: Use an apostrophe to indicate the *possessive*, not to indicate plural. The exception comes from "its", which is the possessive of "it"; this throws people off because "it's" is also a valid word (although a contraction of "it is").

Even with dates and acronyms, it's find to pluralize just by adding a trailing -s: "the 1990s", "CDs, DVDs, and MILFs", etc.

To Henry: What is this site? What does "natural fiber" mean? Petroleum is naturally occurring but thing's (kidding Peter) processed from it are not necessarily good to sleep on.

To Peter: please get a life. Correcting people misusing apostrophes instead of appreciating her taking the time to share this blog and sharing your own information about the brand/materials in your baby bed is a much more noble act. Make it your "personal quest" to use the internet to share information, not to school strangers.

    Honestly.

..and that's what Peter is doing. Sharing information and not being at all rude about it unlike yourself a bit.

This is an interesting post. I hear a lot of good feedbacks about memory foam mattresses, quite contrary to what this stated. This may be another side of the story.

I got news for you. All inner-spring mattresses have a lot of foam in them as well. The foam is made from the same chemicals as memory foam. So, unless you buy a super expensive latex mattress, you won't be able to get away from them.

I thought that kind of mattress is the best to have. I can't believe that it is very toxic. I think I will just stick to my old bed.

I bought a memory foam topper about a week ago. The smell is horrible! I tried it for 3 nights and woke up with a headache and nauseous each morning. I was very itchy and my nose burned as well during the night. Needless to say this item will be going back to the store. The one I bought is supposed to be Green Tea scented to offset the chemical smell but it does not. My 10 year old said the smell reminded him of the dentist's office.

My memory foam,I noticed fibers (fiberglass?)floating in the air as I was changing the cover on it.it also had what it looked to black mold growing.....any info out there?

J.f.b.- those fibers in the air and the black spots which may be mold are signs of an unhealthy mattress. If you are at all able to do so i would urge you to discard the mattress asap and destroy it so noone else can think of using it. It is a certain danger to your health -- i know this because i am living the health consequence of a mattress w a pillowtop foam which disintegrated immediately after delivery and sprayed my home with fibers-- visible at night if u shine a flashlight. The fibers are actually microscopic organisms using fibers as vectors. You may notice skin having pink raised spots like insect bites and /or cotton tufts gathering on your cotton or wool clothes / all from a toxic mattress.

A memory foam topper is no substitute for a true memory foam mattress. You will normally find cheap nasty knock offs from China masquerading as the genuine article this could of been the case with your mattress toper!
